The paper reports numerical simulations of unsteady compressible magnetic merging flows in one space dimension. The governing MHD equations and the reduction to nondimensional form are presented. The results of computations are compared for various initial configurations and plasma parameters. The one-dimensional results are compared with previous work on X-type reconnection. Implications for the tearing mode instability are considered. It is shown that the one-dimensional merging rates agree rather well with the two-dimensional results of Ugai and Tsuda (1977). The study points out the lack of significant current density enhancement at the neutral sheet in both one- and two-dimensional merging flows from static initial states in mechanical equilibrium.
