We present detailed decomposition of HST images of the host galaxies of Type 1 AGNs with the two-dimensional image-fitting code GALFIT. We perform extensive simulations to investigate the reliability of our decomposition method. The simulations take into account PSF variations and cover a wide range of AGN and host galaxy properties (AGN-to-host galaxy luminosity contrast, signal-to-noise ratio, and galaxy size, luminosity, and central concentration). We find that PSF mismatches that are typically seen in HST data can introduce significant uncertainties in the fits. We give practical suggestions to minimize systematic errors and to derive realistic error bars on host galaxy parameters. Using a new version of GALFIT that allows us to fit non-axisymmetric structures in the host, including spiral arms, bars, and tidal features, we apply our technique to investigate the relationship between black hole mass and bulge luminosity in a sample of Type 1 AGNs.
