Photoelectric UBV photometry is presented for a sequence of 63 stars with V between 9.7 and 18.1 that are located in or near NGC 6822. Also given are color observations for four bright star clusters and MK spectral types for 11 of the most luminous stars in this galaxy. Preliminary data indicate that the brightest Cepheid in NGC 6822 may be much bluer than are galactic Cepheids of similar period. The foreground reddening in the direction of NGC 6822 is about 0.3. The average reddening of the brightest stars is found to be 0.42 + or - 0.05, resulting in a true distance modulus of 23.0 and a distance R of about 400 kpc. A comparison with Kayser's (1966) photographic photometry is given.
