It's time to survey our neighbors. This is a call for any and all stars, brown dwarfs, and planets known within 10 pc of the Sun. In the spirit of the next human census to be carried out on planet Earth in 2010, RECONS (Research Consortium On Nearby Stars, celebrating its 15th year in 2009) is gearing up to complete a decadal census of the Sun's neighbors, including our own discoveries and those by fellow colleagues.
We will present the latest results on the census of the 10 pc sample and place the results into context for the Milky Way. A comprehensive assessment of the known constituency and its change since 2000 reveals several discoveries of stellar systems within 5 pc and a significant number of new additions between 5 and 10 pc. These results are fundamentally changing our understanding of the number of red dwarfs in the Galaxy. Also notable are the growing populations of identified
planets orbiting nearby stars and the relative dearth (so far) of brown dwarfs as free floaters or as companions. Overall, our neighbors are significantly redder and more populated with planets than 10 years ago.
