The problem of a heavy wire tethered to a satellite in a circular orbit is analyzed. The wire is supple and nonextensible, the variation of its density is represented by a known function, the satellite is assumed to be much larger in mass, and the wire is assumed not to cause perturbations of satellite motion. A suitable expression of the Hamilton-Ostrogradsky variation position is derived, the equilibrium position of the wire is determined, and the stability of the equilibrium position is analyzed.
