Arguments based on in situ observations with the plasma spectrometers aboard the Mars 2 and 5 space probes are examined which favor the hypothesis that a heavy-ion flux was detected in the region where the solar wind flows past Mars. Objections to this hypothesis and an attempt to explain the observations in other terms are shown to be unconvincing. It is concluded that although there are still no direct experimental measurements of heavy ions near Mars, at least two ion components are present in the plasma in the region where the solar wind flows past Mars.
