Recent variability studies have suggested the existence of a correspondence between Galactic black holes (GBHs) in different spectral states and different classes of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), the so called grand unification model. However, these studies, which are based on linear methods, are hampered by the difference in quality of GBH and AGN light curves. Here we investigate the variability properties of a GBH, 4U1543-47, using non-linear techniques that are well suited for the analysis of noisy data. Preliminary results indicate that these techniques are indeed sensitive and robust diagnostics for GBHs in different spectral states and for AGN. Additionally, this analysis suggests the presence of non-linearity associated only with specific spectral states, providing important constraints for the theoretical models aiming to explain the origin of GBH spectral states.
