The minor-axis profile of NGC 4565 has been measured between 20 and 25.7 V mag per sq arcsec to complement recent faint photometry by Hegyi and Gerber (1977) and by Spinrad et al. (1978). The composite profile consists of an inner segment only moderately well-fitted by a de Vaucouleurs law and a shallower outer power, or fourth-root, law. Both segments are much steeper than profiles of elliptical galaxies. This provides early evidence that disk-galaxy spheroids differ significantly from elliptical galaxies. However, it is suggested that there is still no evidence that any of the observations has optically detected a 'massive halo.'
