A large sample of Population I K giants with known C-12/C-13 ratios is examined to obtain information on the general relation between C-13 content and CNO abundances. The overall CN strength of each giant is compared with its C-12/C-13 ratio, and it is demonstrated that a relation exists between C-13 content and CN strength for the sample of (primarily) Population I K giants. Specifically, stars with very low C-12/C-13 ratios (less than 15) are shown to be weak-CN stars. The observations are compared with the CN strengths that would be expected from mixing of CN-cycle material. It is found that CN becomes weaker as carbon is processed into nitrogen, that the observed effect sets in more rapidly than the gradual decrease indicated by calculations, and that a simple picture of C-13 enhancement with a concurrent conversion of carbon into nitrogen does not appear to give a particularly good account of the data. It is noted that some (C-13)-rich stars are CN-weak simply because they are metal-poor or have low total carbon abundances.
