Photoelectric measurements have been made of the strength of the 5780-A interstellar band in the spectra of 50 early-type stars. The purpose of this work is to provide accurate strengths which have reliable error estimates. A comparison with previous work shows serious systematic differences between various sets of data. In particular, differing zero points are found; this has led some authors to suggest that there are unreddened stars which exhibit reasonably strong interstellar bands. The present data do not show this effect. The strength of the band is correlated with the visible extinction, the strength of the 2200-A absorption maximum, and the extinction at 1550 A, but considerable intrinsic scatter is present in all three cases. This seems to indicate that the agent responsible for the continuous diffuse band is different from that responsible for the continuous interstellar absorption. In particular, the present data do not support the idea that small dust grains cause the diffuse bands as well as the ultraviolet extinction.
