BL Lacertae objects compose an especially exotic subclass of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) characterized by strong multiwavelength emission, notable polarization, marked variability and nearly featureless optical spectra. Their observed properties are explained in the standard paradigm as FR I radio galaxies with a beamed radio jet pointed toward the observer. Their rarity and spectral properties require large areal multiwavelength surveys for efficient recovery. For my dissertation, I assembled large samples of many hundreds of BL Lacs from a combination of SDSS optical spectroscopy, FIRST/NVSS radio imaging, and RASS X-ray imaging. These are among the largest samples ever derived from uniform selection approaches; perhaps most excitingly, each object emerges with a high-quality SDSS spectrum and homogeneous multiwavelength coverage. Survey selection and the resultant very large BL Lac samples will be described. Initial analysis of these unusually large, homogeneous samples generally supports the standard AGN unification model. We gratefully acknowledge the SDSS and SDSS-II collaborations, and support from NASA/ADP grant NNG05GC45G.
