A method is proposed for obtaining approximate analytical expressions for the fundamental functions introduced by Sobolev (1972). Relatively simple but fairly accurate expressions are formulated for some important auxiliary functions of radiative-transfer theory in the cases of a homogeneous half-space and a layer of finite optical depth. The possibilities of the proposed method are illustrated by considering certain approximations of the phase function for the cases of a four-term phase function, Rayleigh scattering, linearly anisotropic scattering, and isotropic scattering. The accuracy of the approximate analytical expressions obtained for the fundamental functions is evaluated.
