The optical spectrum of filaments in Tycho's supernova remnant shows only H-alpha and H-beta emission over the wavelength range 4700-8000 A. It is suggested that the optical filaments producing this emission may be density enhancements at a temperature near 100,000 K. Even though nonequilibrium processes are considered which can lead to much lower electron temperatures than equilibrium models, it does not seem possible to reconcile the 21-cm absorption data, the optical proper motions, and the optical surface brightness.
