Chromatism in radio telescopes due to the incomplete absorption and subsequent scattering of the energy incident on the telescope feed is analyzed. The results are expressed in the form of a scattering factor, values of which are computed using simple models of feeds for both primary- and secondary-focus telescopes. Cases are considered which involve unpolarized plane-wave illumination, an extended incoherent source in the spillover region, and a point source in the main beam. Approximate calculations of the scattering are performed for a circular single-mode TE(11) waveguide feed with plane circular flanges. A typical centimeter-wavelength prime-focus telescope with a mirror reflection coefficient of 0.001 and a spillover temperature of 10 K is predicted to have a baseline ripple of 0.04 to 0.08 K for a spillover scattering factor of approximately 1 to 2.
