An outline is given of a long-term program to study dwarf novae spectra at ultraviolet and optical wavelengths. Optical and ultraviolet spectrophotometry were obtained for the following dwarf novae: VW Hyi, WX Hyi, Z Cha, BV Cen, EX Hya, and V436 Cen. Results show that some of the continuum spectra show agreement with steady disc models. Also, the temperatures estimated from the turnover or absence of turnover at short wavelengths indicate inner disc temperatures up to at least 80,000 K. The fraction of the accretion luminosity emitted in the visible wavelength range is of order a few percent, simplying a large bolometric correction. In addition, for a given dwarf nova the continuum slope rises more steeply towards the ultraviolet as the brightness increases, implying that during the outburst the disc is hotter and that the bolometric correction changes. No 2200A feature is seen indicating very little interstellar reddening. The main spectral lines seen in the ultraviolet include N V, O I, C II, Si IV, C IV, He II, Al III, and Mg II.
