An absorption feature of exceptional strength was detected in the spectrum of the cool degenerate lambda 4670 or C2 star LP 145-141. This feature is tentatively identified as a dissociation continuum of C2. Theoretical calculations of dissociation and ionization equilibria confirm that molecule formation is strongly favored in the helium-rich, high pressure atmosphere of this object, with CO, C2, or O2 being dominant, depending on the He/C and C/O ratios.
