High dispersion spectra of V861 Sco (HD 152667) taken with International Ultraviolet Explorer at several orbital phases are presented, as well as simultaneous optical spectroscopy, and UVBY and infrared photometry. The UV spectrum is normal for a BOIa supergiant; a number of lines show P Cygni profiles with, in several cases, sharp multiple absorption components. No large phase dependent variations in the UV are detectable. The optical spectra reveal significant changes at H, He I 6678 and especially at H which is seen in emission and in absorption at different times. The velocity variability is strongly correlated with the outward velocity in the sense that velocities further out in the wind show more variability. The infrared photometry does not support the idea of a compact secondary. An evolutionary scenario, starting from a ZAMS-system of 80 solar masses + 10 solar masses is developed leading to an actual system of a 34 solar masses (BOI a) primary with a 10 solar mass (B2V) companion. The primary which just ignited helium in the core is nearly filling its Roche lobe, and will start soon (or has just started) a case B of mass transfer. The mass loss rate is estimated from the UV at 1.5 x 10 to the minus 6th power solar masses/year, and from theoretical considerations of the system parameters at 2.5 x 10 to the minus 6th power solar masses/year infrared excess points to 0.00005 solar masses/year.
