Several low resolution International Ultraviolet Explorer IUE spectra of the massive X-ray binaries LMC X-4 and SMC X-1 were obtained at both short and long wavelengths. Highly ionized resonance lines of N(V), C(IV), and Si (IV) show marked changes with orbital phase, being particularly weak when the X-ray source is in front of the primary; the effect is most striking in LMC X-4. The continuum in each case shows the characteristic double wave light variation seen at visible wavelengths and with similar amplitude.
