UV spectra of the novae V603 Aql, HR Del, RR Pic, the recurrent nova T CrB, the dwarf nova RU Peg and the novalike variable TT Ari were taken, and interstellar extinction values, temperatures and sizes were derived. The spectroscopuic appearance of the novae, the recurrent nova and the dwarf nova in the UV was not unlike that of the X-ray binary HZ Her, which consisted of an F-type main sequence star and a compact companion surrounded by an accretion disk. It was assumed that the continuum and the emission lines observed in the UV spectra of the cataclysmic variables are due to line radiation emitted from the optically thick parts of an accretion disk or shell surrounding a star of small size. The observed temperature distribution in the optically thick parts of the accretion disks was similar to that of theoretical disk models.
