Six long wave low resolution International Ultraviolet Explorer spectrograms obtained of the spotted eclipsing binary XY UMa are discussed. They show a strong chromospheric continuum rising from lambda lambda 240 nm to lambda 310 nm. On it are superimposed a large number of emission, and a few absorption features. The most prominent ones are those of the Mg 2 resonance doublet and of Fe 2 emission line blends. Both the continuum and the emission features show orbital phase dependent variations. The comparison with early simultaneous optical photometric and spectroscopic observations exhibits the interaction of the photospheric and chromospheric activity, the latter of which is much enhanced whenever the optical light curve shows depressions.
