Preliminary results of a comprehensive laboratory simulation of the physical and chemical processes involved in the synthesis of molecules in interstellar gas and dust clouds are reported. Experiments were performed in a cooled reactor chamber filled with a mixture of H2, He, CO, O2, N2 and H2S, with an electrodeless discharge used to initiate reactions and products analyzed by a magnetic resonance mass spectrometer with an electron impact source. The molecules formed are found to correspond to a large extent to those discovered in the interstellar cloud Sgr B2, and suggest the presence of undetected compounds in the cloud as well. Results also demonstrate the necessity of an energy flux in the interstellar medium for the occurrence of chemical reactions and the formation of new molecules, and of a cooled surface, presumably corresponding to interstellar dust grains, for the formation and/or accumulation of newly formed molecules.
