Data obtained from photographic observations based on the instantaneous exposure technique indicate that for bright meteors, the length of the flowing column at a given instant reaches tens and hundreds of meters, and even several kilometers in the case of especially bright bolides. The present analysis of instantaneous photographs of bright meteors bears out earlier conclusions concerning the synchronicity of the change in the extent of the afterglow region of the meteor with the change in brightness. A spectral survey indicates that the afterglow is primarily due to emission in the H and K lines of Ca II.
