In large-scale (l,v) diagrams from surveys of HI 21-cm emission lines, there are many faint wing-like features protruding beyond the velocity boundaries of Galactic rotation (Forbidden-Velocity Wings, FVWs). These are confined within small areas (< 2 deg). Their sizes and high velocities imply that they are associated with violent events. One of the strongest candidates for their origin are the rapidly expanding HI shells of previously unrecognized, old, Galactic SNRs. We have made high-resolution HI observations toward 22 FVWs using the Arecibo 305-m and the Green Bank 100-m telescopes. Some of the Arecibo observations were part of the GALFA (Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array) project. Results show that 50-60% of the observed FVWs are likely to be partial expanding shells. Five of these show the clear features of an expanding shell in both individual channel images and position-velocity diagrams. We have investigated a simple model to demonstrate that an expanding shell can generate the various features of the FVWs as seen in position-velocity diagrams. About half of the shell-type FVWs do not have spatially associated early-type stars, and most do not have associated radio continuum features. This suggests that a significant fraction of the FVW population could indeed be the HI shells of old Galactic SNRs that are too faint to be detected in the radio continuum. The other 40-50% of FVWs seem to have cloud-related origins, such as high/intermediate-velocity clouds or halo clouds.
