THE solubility of mercury in water is 0.32 µM at 25° C and 1.7 µM at 90° C (ref. 1). The dissolved mercury absorbs the 2537 Å resonance line although not to the same extent as in the vapour phase due to the solvation broadening of its absorption band2. It has been shown that mercury-saturated liquid hydrocarbons will undergo photosensitization3-6 and the results of these investigations have been compared with those from high-energy radiolysis indicating that the process can be of value in the study of the behaviour of molecular fragments and excited states in the liquid. This communication reports some preliminary results in the photosensitization of liquid water and its application to the characterization of the intermediates involved in the radiolysis.
