Type Ia supernovae have become an essential tool of modern observational cosmology. By studying the distance-redshift relation of large number of type Ia SNe, the nature of dark energy can be unveiled. Type Ia supernovae however are affected by gravitational lensing due to the mass distribution along the line of sight between the supernova and the observer. This can lead to an amplification or de-amplification of the supernova fluxes and causes an additional dispersion in the Hubble diagram. With large number of precisely measured high-redshift supernovae, it should in principle be possible to detect a correlation between the estimated magnification of the supernovae and the observed brightness, i.e the residuals in the Hubble diagram calculated based on a specific cosmological model. A correlation would lead to interesting information and constraints on the foreground galaxies. In my thesis work, I have used the SuperNova Legacy survey (SNLS) data to search for this "lensing signal". The magnification of each supernova has been estimated using photometric data of foreground galaxies together with a modeling of the mass distribution of these galaxies. In this dissertation talk I will present the method used and preliminary results based on the SNLS 3-year dataset.
