The construction of the Astrophysics Research Consortium telescope at Apache Point, New Mexico by five U.S. universities is discussed. The telescope includes a 3.5-m borosilicate honeycomb mirror blank and has a speed of f/1.75. The telescope is planned to point to within 1 arcsec of a specified position, track to an accuracy of 0.2 arcsec for 10 min without guiding, and a slew of one revolution per min. Instruments include low- and high-resolution CCD cameras, an IR array detector, and two spectrographs. The telescope is expected to begin full operation in early 1990.
