The Phoenix spacecraft landed on the northern plains of Mars on May 25, 2008 and immediately began a series of experiments designed to determine if ice was present under the dry surface, if the water ice represented a habitable zone, and to monitor the polar weather from summer to fall. These experiments have proved the existence of ice about 5 cm below the surface and revealed components of the soil that are formed only in liquid water: calcium carbonate and phyllosilicates. In addition, the soils are alkaline and the dominant soluble salt is a perchlorate. The implications of these results will be discussed.
