Accretion onto a black hole can produce enormous power which has a profound influence on its surroundings. The power is emitted in the form of radiation or as a matter outflow such as a jet. Observational evidence of the accretion flow in the immediate vicinity of the black hole where the power is released, and of its effects on both cold and hot gas in the host galaxy, will be used to illustrate and discuss the processes involved. Examples will be taken from Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, nearby Active Galactic Nuclei and the central galaxies in cool-core clusters. Although the basic energetics appear to be understood, many puzzles and gaps remain in understanding the details of how black holes work, not least the issue of how tight feedback between the accreting black hole and its host galaxy or cluster core is achieved.
