It is shown that WR stars probably evolve into SN Ib and that SN II are produced by somewhat less massive progenitors. Finally SN Ia are likely produced by deflagration of CO white dwarfs in close binary systems. Newly derived supernova rates show that supernovae produced by massive progenitors are at least six times as frequent (per unit volume of space) as are supernovae resulting from the deflagration of white dwarfs. Therefore, galaxies that presently exhibit enhanced supernova rates probably experienced violent bursts of star formation recently. Galactic radio supernova remnants are shown to provide information on the large-scale distribution of interstellar gas but give little insight into the distribution of supernova progenitors.
