The time derivative, P, of the X-ray period, P, of Cyg X-3 has now been measured with high accuracy and confirmed by observation from different satellites. It differs markedly in sign and magnitude from period derivatives of other binary systems with similar periods. Assuming that the X-ray period is the orbital period of a binary consisting of a compact primary and a Roche lobe-filling secondary, the amplitude of P/P gives m2/m2 within a constant factor of order unity. The author finds that a main-sequence secondary is not consistent with the observed P/P, but that a degenerate secondary (with a mass from 0.0004 to 0.05 M_sun;) is. The two least contrived mechanisms for driving the change in period are (1) that the system is evolving toward an unstable mass transfer regime or (2) that the orbit of a close third body serves as a sink for angular momentum.
