New observational data on the highly polarized QSO OI 287 are reported. The principal observational results relevant to the nature of the polarization are the constancy of the polarization with time, the possible polarization of the forbidden O III 4959, 5007 A lines, and the alignment of the optical polarization position angle with the radio structure. Additional important features include the strong narrow-line emission, the larger than normal H-alpha/H-beta value, the red optical and near-infrared continuum, and the comparatively weak emission in the mid- and far-infrared regions. The observations are discussed in terms of a model which incorporates a highly inclined ring of dust which both scatters and obscures the direct nuclear emission.
