An efficient and accurate method for evaluating the line-broadening Voigt function H(a, v) is proposed which performs well using large as well as small computers. The method allows Gaussian quadrature formulas to be employed for most values of a and v, achieving a higher level of accuracy than Hermite's quadrature formula for improper integrals. The number of correct significant figures obtained for H(a, v) is determined as a function of a and v.
