A set of beta index measurements were obtained for 22 Ap stars between 1984 and 1986. Periodic variability of the beta index with the rotational phase is found for 17 of the stars, and the upper limits of variations are determined for the remaining five stars. A model of horizontal and vertical chemical inhomogeneity caused by the diffusion of elements is shown to qualitatively account for the similarity and observed phase relations between photometric and Balmer line variations, along with the observed mean amplitudes of the beta variations, for most of the Ap stars considered.
