The combination of large Schmidt telescopes and automated measuring machines has proved to be an extremely powerful one. In recent years major new results in widely different fields in astronomy have developed directly from this connection. Of the three most active Schmidt telescopes in the world (UK, ESO and Palomar), the UK Schmidt is the most productive and produces astronomical photographs of the highest quality. The UK also has the lead in the development of automated measuring facilities (APM, COSMOS and GALAXY), all of which were specifically designed to obtain quantitative information from photographic plates.
