A definition of a black hole is given which is equivalent to Tipler's (1977) definition but is simpler and more clearly a formalization of the usual concept of a black hole. The new definition says that the black hole consists of the closure of the set of points consisting of (1) the topologically smallest future set containing the set T of points of a stably causal spacetime which belong to noncosmological trapped surfaces and (2) any points from which it is impossible to avoid falling into the black hole.
