In July 1988, the Soviet Union is planning to launch two spacecraft which will travel to Mars and Phobos. Equipment on the spacecraft will record data on the Martian surface, atmosphere, ionosphere, and magnetosphere; the spacecraft and their probes will record data on Phobos's surface, inner structure, and orbital motion. During the cruise to Mars, the spacecraft will observe the sun's corona and upper chromosphere, solar flares, and solar oscillations. The solar wind and solar cosmic rays, interplanetary shocks, and cosmic and solar gamma-ray bursts will also be studied.
