Using infrared Brackett γ observations the author derives the number of ionizing photons in nine starburst nuclei and three Seyfert 2s. All of these nuclei have been detected in soft (0.5 - 3 keV) X-rays. For the starburst nuclei there is a good correlation between the Brackett γ strength and X-rays. There is a quantitative agreement with models that explain the X-rays as the integrated emission from a population of massive binary stars.
