The generation of the magnetic field in the surface layers of Ap stars
by a 'battery' current, which develops in the presence of chemical
inhomogeneities, is discussed. The flow velocities produced by the
rotation of the star and by the magnetic field are estimated. It is
shown that they do not prevent the process of field generation.
