The understanding of energy generation in Type I X-ray bursts will be enhanced by a direct measurement of the nuclear reaction cross section 30S(α,p)33Cl. Models of this explosive stellar nucleosynthesis are constrained by the observations of bursts with multiple peaks in their bolometric luminosity. A recent model by Fisker, Thielemann, & Wiescher (2004) gives a theoretical basis for a nuclear waiting point at 30S in order to explain these observations. In order to experimentally test the predictions of this model, the authors undertook two days of 30S radioactive ion beam (RIB) development in December 2006 in preparation for a 2008 experiment directly measuring the α(30S,p) cross section.
