Numerous bands of HCN and C2H2 are detected in high-resolution 3-micron spectra of carbon stars. No prominent line absorption in the 3-micron band remains unidentified. The strengths of the bands are very sensitive to stellar surface temperature and cannot be readily interpreted as abundance indicators. No strong evidence is found for a contribution to the 3-micron band by a continuous absorber (e.g., C3 or grains), but a possible contribution in some cases cannot be ruled out.
