The paper deals with the origin of X-rays from pulsars in whose spectrum the cyclotron lines have been detected. The analysis is based on a radiation model which includes two components: a hot spot in a dense plasma atmosphere and an extended accreting column in the inhomogeneous magnetic field of a neutron star. The cyclotron lines are formed similarly to the Fraunhofer spectrum of ordinary stars and are, in fact, absorption lines. For objects like Her X-1 and 4U0115+63, the cyclotron absorption in the extended accreting column with inhomogeneous magnetic field should be unessential.
