Synoptic observations of the giant outburst of the 8 km/s water maser source near Orion-KL are reported. The light curve is characterized by flux oscillations of the order of several months, with the degree of linear polarization apparently correlated with the flux variations. The line width has increased steadily with time. The flare connotes isolated and energetic events in the neighbourhood of the Orion-KL region which may be due to the action of an emerging protostar or a region whose density and temperature now favor enhanced masering. The high degree of linear polarization favors a saturated maser.
