Scientific paper

Nonparametric statistical models are presented to fully connect the observed kinematics to internal dynamics and gravitational potential of nonrotating globular clusters. The models assume only spherical symmetry and a smooth, static potential; the mass distribution plays the role of a free "parameter" and, in principle, is completely determined by the kinematics. The inclusion of proper-motion velocities in the data is shown to be required for a unique solution to the internal dynamics and mass distribution; observations of stellar densities and radial velocities alone are not sufficient to meaningfully constrain cluster dynamics and total mass.
