A transformation in American visual culture occurred during the last quarter of the nineteenth century as photography challenged traditional Victorian uses of hand-drawn images. Photographs became affiliated with factual, evidential documentation of the real world while hand-drawn images became an expression of the artistic, inner world of human experience. Popular illustrated magazines during this period were a significant site where the emerging differences between photographic and hand-drawn images were expressed. Astronomy traditionally used hand-drawn illustrations as astronomical evidence. Photography and the emerging modern use of images challenged this tradition. When discussions of life on Mars entered the popular magazines during the late 1870s, astronomers were confronted with America's transforming visual culture. Astronomy was forced to transform its production and use of images in order to emerge into the twentieth century as a modern visual science. This study examines the transformation of astronomy at the turn of the century as viewed through the articles and images in the popular illustrated magazines. Astronomy's transformation provides an example of the struggle a visual community experiences as it transforms. This study provides a close reading of the process of visual transformation for scholars interested in current visual transformations. This study also provides insight into the use of popular illustrated magazines as a site for cultural exchange. The magazines yielded discussions from a broad spectrum of American culture and presented a diversity of viewpoints that provide a rich view of astronomy's transformation.
