Hybrid arrays have revolutionized near-infrared astronomy. A general overview of the operation of such arrays is given, together with details of the 2562 Indium Antimonide and Mercury Cadmium Telluride arrays used in the UCLA Germini 2-channel near-infrared camera. Various instruments were used to carry out an imaging infrared search for companions to 192 previously-known members of the Hyades cluster. The results are presented, including the detection of 2 very-low-mass stars and 6 candidate brown dwarfs. Calculations based on these results and known binary star orbital distributions are used to constrain the Hyades initial mass function. These imply a down-turn in the IMF, with a power-law exponent below 0.1 solar mass of one or less.
