Using an eigenspectrum decomposition technique, we separate the host galaxy from the broad line active galactic nucleus (AGN) in a set of about 5,000 spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The technique accurately reproduces the AGN and host galaxy spectra, their contributing fractions, and classifications, up to a redshift of about z=0.75. The sample of SDSS AGN host galaxies has a significantly younger stellar population than non-active galaxies, and a larger fraction of AGN hosts appear to have post-starburst activity. The host galaxies are mostly very luminous, and the host and AGN luminosities are mildly correlated. Aside from luminosity, there is little or no correlation among the AGN and host properties as determined by the eigencoefficients.
