It is shown that the currently popular unified scheme, in which the observed differences in the radio properties of powerful radio galaxies and steep-spectrum quasars are considered to arise merely from their supposedly different orientations with respect to the observer's line of sight, is incompatible with the observed large variations with redshift in the number density ratio and the relative sizes of radio galaxies and quasars in radio-complete samples. These discrepancies cannot be explained in a consistent manner, even by invoking a suitable cosmic evolution in the opening angle of the obscuring torus which may be partially surrounding the broadline region.
