Results of an investigation of the statistical properties of gravitational lensing by rich distant clusters of galaxies are presented. Arc properties are found to depend strongly on the adopted cluster density profiles, and hence provide sharp constraints on the models for matter distribution in clusters. It is estimated that there are over 100 giant luminous arcs over the whole sky. The present model also yields a distribution of the redshifts of the arc clusters peaking at z of about 0.2-0.3, while most of the arc sources are expected at redshifts ranging from 0.5 to 1.3; both these results agree with the observational data. The existence of giant radio arcs, detectable in numbers comparable to the estimated number of giant optical luminous arcs, is predicted.
