The discovery of pulsars was the first confirmation of the existence of neutron stars. This book presents new observations and recent theoretical advances of neutron stars focusing on the physics, evolution, and emissions of neutron stars without stellar companions. Observational highlights include results from the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory, ROSAT and GINGA, the ASGAT and Whipple Observatory TeV experiments, and the Hubble Space Telescope. Theoretical contributions embody thermal and nonthermal emission mechanisms, properties of dense matter and the generation and evolution of magnetic fields. It will be useful to researchers working at the cutting edge of high-energy astrophysics.
