We present high signal-to-noise ratio observations of the near- infrared hydrogen recombination fines Paβ, Brβ and Brα in the galaxies NGC 1614 and 7714. The data are used in conjunction with existing optical line fluxes to examine the dust extinction towards the star-forming nuclei of these galaxies. In the case of NGC 1614, at least, the conventional model of a foreground absorbing screen is found to be incorrect, resulting in an underestimate of the true extinction.
